For Sonya Lynn aka Red Sonya, DJing is a way of life. She hosts and plays weekly events; is paired up with a fellow San Diego DJ, AlienTom; and conveniently lives behind a loud bar so she and her beau can practice their craft into the wee hours of the night.

Red Sonya creates fresh and firey beats that have the power to elevate the energy of the dance floor wherever she roams. She began spinning deep house music in 2002 but has since evolved to play minimal and tech-house with dirty bass lines and layers of tripped-out funk. For those of you who don’t speak ‘electronics’ this means “damn good booty shakin’ music.”

She’s brought her sultry sound to places like The Red C Lounge, Bar Dynamite and the Kava Lounge but over the past year, Red Sonya’s career has taken flight with Lady Lush, her premiere weekly night at the Airport Lounge. Now a mobile event at various venues, Lady Lush celebrates local talent with an all-girl DJ lineup. Art and fashion add a backdrop to the event with live artists like Billy Martinez painting life-size portraits and boutiques such as Mesh selling their apparel.

“It’s a fun and empowering way to get girl DJs together,” she says. “I’m finding out there are a lot of us out there now.”

Billy Martinez in Revolt in Style Magazine

Thanks, Billy Martinez, for the mention in this Revolt In Style Magazine article! You rock!
Billy Martinez in Revolt Magazine

Revolt: “So what exactly is Live Art? Tell us a little more about the process.”

Billy Martinez: “I have bee performing Live Art at some of the coolest hot spots here in San Diego and have had the privilege to work with some really cool DJ’s. Lately I have been doing a lot of Lady Lush nights at the Airport Lounge hosted by one of my favorite DJ’s Red Sonya. There I shell out two to four paintings simultaneously right on stage. All my paintings are of girls. All different types. All done with household paints, you know, the stuff you paint your house with, and of course acrylics and whatever I can get my hands on….”

“After the show, DJ Red Sonya provided the night’s killer soundtrack complete with ambient beats and techno bleeps, which was perfect for the random make-out sessions that broke out in the Weavers Touch rug-adorned cabanas (hey, we are in a hotel; get a room!).” ~Riviera Magazine
